Noah’s Senior Session: A Senior Experience as Unique as He Is

One of my favorite things about being a senior photographer is getting to know the person behind the senior pictures.

Every senior comes to me with their own personality, interests, ideas, and style, and my job is to take all of those pieces and turn them into a gallery that feels like them. Noah’s senior session was such a perfect example of that.

From the very beginning, Noah was awesome to work with. During our planning session, I loved hearing his ideas and learning more about the things that have been important to him throughout high school. He knew he wanted his senior portraits to include more than just traditional pictures. He wanted to incorporate two big parts of his high school experience—swimming and theater—while also showing off his personal style.

And I was completely on board!

Starting at Newfields in Indianapolis

We started Noah’s senior session at Newfields in Indianapolis, which ended up being the perfect backdrop for his style.

For this part of the session, Noah wore a light gray three-piece suit. The combination of his outfit and the timeless architecture of the Lilly House was absolutely perfect. There was something about the classic feel of the location paired with his modern style that just worked.

As a senior photographer, I love when an outfit and location come together like that. Sometimes you walk into a location with an idea in your head, and then everything just falls into place.

That definitely happened with Noah.

But Noah wasn't going to let us get away with just one look!

He also brought his senior jeans, which he had made himself. I loved that he chose to include them because they were such a great representation of his personality. Senior pictures don't always have to be formal or traditional. Sometimes the most meaningful images come from the things that are uniquely you.

And these definitely felt like Noah.

Making His Swim Team a Part of His Senior Pictures

Next, we incorporated Noah’s involvement with the Tri-West High School swim team.

I knew I wanted to do something a little different with these images. Instead of simply taking a few traditional sports portraits, we created individual images that I could later use to build a composite senior portrait.

This is one of my favorite things about being a photographer. I love taking an idea that starts with, “What if we did this?” and turning it into a finished image.

We photographed the different elements we needed, and later I combined them into one final portrait.

The result was an image that really showcases Noah as a swimmer in a way that a single photograph simply couldn't. It became more than just a picture of him in his swim gear—it became a piece of artwork celebrating something that has been a part of his high school experience.

I absolutely loved creating it!

Lights, Camera, Theater!

And then there was theater.

Since Noah has also been involved in Tri-West High School theater, we knew we had to bring that part of his story into his senior session too.

For these portraits, we headed into the school auditorium and used the stage, the theater space, and the spotlight to create something completely different from his Newfields portraits.

We played around with the lighting and had some fun with the stage. There was something really cool about watching Noah step into that environment and seeing how different it felt from the polished portraits we had created at his earlier session.

That's what I love about incorporating extracurricular activities into senior pictures. When you include the things a senior has spent years doing, the images become more meaningful.

Years from now, Noah won't just look at these photographs and remember what he looked like as a high school senior. He'll remember swimming, theater, the stage, his school, and this particular chapter of his life.

And that's exactly what senior pictures should do.

More Than Just Senior Pictures

When I look back at Noah's session, I love how different each part of it feels.

We had the classic and sophisticated portraits at Newfields.

We had his custom senior jeans that showed off his personality and style.

We created a dramatic swim composite to celebrate his time on the Tri-West swim team.

And we finished with theater portraits on the stage at his high school.

Each part was different, but together they told Noah's story.

That is why I love having a planning session before a senior's photography experience. I don't want to simply show up, take a few pictures, and send you home. I want to know what makes you you. I want to hear your ideas. I want to know what activities you've been involved in, what you love, what you want to remember, and what kind of images you've been dreaming about.

Because when we take the time to plan those things, we can create a senior gallery that is so much more than a collection of pretty pictures.

It becomes your story.

Thank You, Noah!

Noah, thank you for trusting me with your senior portraits and for bringing so many great ideas to the planning process. You were seriously so much fun to work with, and I loved getting to create these images with you!

I hope when you look back at these photographs years from now, they remind you of this season of your life—not just how you looked, but who you were and everything you loved during your high school years.

Congratulations on your senior year, Noah! I can't wait to see where life takes you next. ❤️
